Beijing calls off exchanges

China has called off some planned exchanges with Vietnam and dispatched aircraft and ships to pick up injured and frightened Chinese nationals caught in violent anti-China riots.
Since Tuesday, severe riots have erupted in many places in Vietnam, leading to robbery, arson and vandalism against foreign businesses, and to casualties and property damage of Chinese citizens, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said.
"The violence has sabotaged the atmosphere and conditions for communication and cooperation between China and Vietnam," Hong said, adding that Beijing will take further action as the situation develops.
When China started drilling for oil around its Zhongjian Island in the Xisha Islands in early May, Vietnam, which claims the waters belong to it, sent military and civilian ships to interrupt the Chinese operation.
The protests in Vietnam turned into violent attacks on companies from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and Singapore.

China's current behaviour vis-à-vis its South China Sea neighbours is aggressive, arrogant and smacks of Han chauvinism and ethnocentrism. Far from being an expression of national pride, it is giving patriotism a bad name. Patriotic Hongkongers should recognise it for what it is: a dangerous ploy.
Not only has Beijing bared expansionist teeth to Vietnam and the Philippines, it has now succeeded in shifting Indonesia from a position of trying to act as a moderator between China and the other South China Sea states to opponent. Twice in recent months, Indonesia has accused China of claiming part of its Natuna island archipelago. So much for a "peaceful rise" when you rile neighbours with populations of more than 400 million, who you assume to be weak.

The timing speaks volumes. On Thursday, while anti-China protests in Vietnam turned deadly, leaving at least two Chinese nationals dead and hundreds of factories damaged, President Xi Jinping was at the Great Hall of People, presenting his vision for China's role in peaceful development.
"There is no 'invasion gene' in Chinese people's DNA and they won't accept the logic that might is right," Xi told a 60th anniversary tribute to the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, a non-governmental organisation .

Cảnh sát Việt Nam cho biết một công nhân Trung Quốc thiệt mạng trong cuộc bạo động tại nhà máy thép Formosa Plastics của Đài Loan tại miền Trung Việt Nam. Đây là mục tiêu tấn công mới nhất của người biểu tình chống Trung Quốc tại Việt Nam.
Hơn một chục nhà máy nước ngoài khác tại Việt Nam đã bị đốt để phản ứng trước việc Bắc Kinh triển khai giàn khoan dầu ở vùng biển tranh chấp tại Biển Đông.
Theo thông báo của công ty Formosa Plastics, ít nhất 90 người đã bị thương trong cuộc tấn công vào nhà máy của công ty này.
The ugly face of rising Asian nationalism
Ever since China National Offshore Oil Corporation moved its hulky $1 billion oil rig into disputed waters just 120 nautical miles off Vietnam’s coast, the two communist neighbours and former allies have been getting stuck into each other.
Chinese flotilla, including armed vessels, have been engaging in water cannon fights as well as old-fashioned ramming against Vietnamese boats. The standoff is taking place not far away from the Paracel Islands, which the Chinese seized from South Vietnam in the dying days of the Vietnam War.
The standoff in the South China Sea has quickly spread to the Vietnamese mainland. Tens of thousands of rioters across many provinces have ransacked what they believed to be Chinese factories; however many of these turned out to be Taiwanese, Singaporean, Korean and Japanese. Several Chinese nationals have been killed and hundreds have been injured, according to various media reports.

CSVN bắt 1400 người, truy tố 300, cấm biểu tình 'trái pháp luật'

SÀI GÒN 17-5 (NV) - Nhà cầm quyền CSVN bắt giữ hơn 1,400 người, lập thủ tục truy tố hơn 300 người sau các vụ bạo động, đồng thời ra lệnh các địa phương “không để xảy ra biểu tình trái pháp luật.”
Cho đến ngày Thứ Sáu 16/5/2014, nhà cầm quyền CSVN đã bắt giữ hơn 1,400 người ở 4 địa phương Sài Gòn, Bình Dương, Đồng Nai và Hà Tĩnh liên quan đến các cuộc biểu tình chống Trung Quốc dẫn tới bạo động. Các cuộc biểu tình chống Trung Quốc mang giàn khoan tới khu vực đặc quyền kinh tế của Việt Nam diễn ra tại 22 tỉnh thị cả nước hồi tuần qua nhưng chỉ xảy ra bạo động ở bốn địa phương vừa kể.
Công an bắt giữ lối 950 người ở Bình Dương, tỉnh Đồng Nai bắt 223 người và ít nhất có 76 người bị bắt ở Hà Tĩnh, nơi vụ bạo động nhắm vào cơ sở đang xây dựng nhà máy luyện thép của tập đoàn công ty Đài Loan Formosa, làm chết người. Các công ty ngoại quốc đã phải dán cờ nước họ ở ngoài cổng để xác định họ không phải công ty Trung Quốc để đừng đập phá. Thậm chí có công ty Đài Loan cũng dán cờ Đài Loan và viết giấy nói họ không phải Trung Quốc, ủng hộ lập trường Việt Nam.
Anti-Chinese riots in Vietnam halted
HANOI, Vietnam, May 18 (UPI) --Anti-Chinese riots that destroyed factories and resulted in two deaths in Vietnam were halted by law enforcement Sunday.
The violent protests started about a week ago after a Chinese oil rig positioned itself in disputed waters in the South China Sea.
The Vietnamese government Sunday deployed law enforcement officers around the Chinese Embassy in Hanoi and the Chinese Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City. Officials said demonstrators would be arrested and prosecuted.

WASHINGTON, May 16 (UPI) --China announced Friday it would continue drilling for oil in the disputed South China Sea, despite anti-Chinese rioting in Vietnam.
Chinese People's Liberation Army Chief of General Staff Gen. Fang Fenghui, visiting Washington, said China could not "afford to lose an inch" of territory in the sea, contested by China, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam. He also blamed Hanoi for inciting violence and warned the United States that its efforts to focus on Asia were fueling hostilities.
Fang added that some Asian nations are using President Barack Obama's recent visit and re-commitment to Asia as an opportunity to foment trouble.

HANOI , Vietnam, May 12 (UPI) --The territorial dispute between China and Vietnam was not addressed at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations conference in Myanmar, leaving Vietnam without allies in the argument.
Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung referred to last week's provocations -- in which China attempted to erect an oil rig in waters of the South China Sea, whose islands are claimed by at least five nations -- as "dangerous and serious violations."
The lack of support of Vietnam's position at the 10-nation summit meeting, which makes decisions by consensus, could be seen as a win for China and indication territorial questions will not be handled collectively.

Xác suất để xảy ra một cuộc hải chiến giữa TQ và VN cũng không có gì cao hơn hồi xảy ra cuộc giao tranh năm 1988 khiến 70 thủy thủ VN bị tử vong. Nhiều người ở Washington cho rằng Bắc Kinh thiếu thận trọng, nhưng trong não trạng của BK hành động khiêu khích này bắt nguồn từ logic chiến thuật mà thành.
Chuyện gì đã xảy ra?
Bắc Kinh khẳng định rằng, theo nghiên cứu lịch sử thì khu vực phía nam biển ĐNA và toàn bộ các nguồn tài nguyên ở đó thuộc về TH. Tuyên bố đường chín gạch mới được thổi phồng lên gần đây của họ đã đánh dấu lãnh thổ, và TQ đã cho triển khai ngư thuyền, tàu cảnh sát biển và tàu chiến để biến nơi ấy thành nhà mình.
